Long Live the Past
"History has to be rewritten in every generation, because although the past does not change the present does; each generation asks new questions of the past, and finds new areas of sympathy as it re-lives different aspects of the experiences of its predecessors."It's true; you can't relive your past or even apply revisionism to alter what was. It happened and, more importantly, it will be remembered. Our association has a lot of past, decades worth.
True Meaning of Easter
While celebrating Easter dinner, Easter egg hunts and Easter baskets, let's all remember the true reason for celebrating Easter.Try and keep religion in religious holidays, as best as you can and always remember to honor those with religions that are dear to them.
Contested Elections and Other Thoughts
Random Thought #1I have always been told that contested elections are good and I would agree. I believe when a person is running for office their passion is tested by a competitor. The same could be said for contested elections at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) level. Desire, commitment, an understanding of issues that NAHB members hold important and a working knowledge of the home building industry overall.
115th Congress; It’s Time to Get Housing Back to Work
(continued from last week's blog article "The 115th and You Can Make Housing Great, Again") During President Donald Trump's visit with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the president expressed that he knows how much we, as a home building industry, have been suffering. The president's own father was a member of NAHB so the president knows the value of what an engaged NAHB can do for builders and, by extension, associates. The beginning stages of reworking Waters of the US and the beginnings of the end of Dodd-Frank are very encouraging for our members across the federation. NAHB understands that they have a window of great opportunity in having a White House that has true business common sense and realizes that we are an industry that fuels our economy.
The 115th and You Can Make Housing Great, Again
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and its over 700 chartered home builders associations (HBA) across the country, helps shape all of our future in the home building industry. Builders across the country, from single-family to multi-family as well as remodelers to mixed-use, benefit from NAHB and its efforts to help our legislators in Washington and the various state capitols understand housing's impact. Each state will have its own statistics to make their discussions with state legislators relevant and successful. In regards to Washington, D.
Resources for National Designation Month
In March, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) celebrates the thousands of home builders, remodelers and associates across the country who have taken the time to earn an NAHB designation — showing their commitment to improving their craft and the value they place on professionalism in the industry. This is a great opportunity for HBAs to spread the word about the value of designations to both your members and consumers. NAHB has created tools you can use to encourage your members to start or complete courses to earn their designation. And, let consumers know the benefits of working with your members who hold designations with sample newsletter articles and customizable articles.
Just the Tip of the Iceberg
Much of the mass of an iceberg is hidden under the surface of the ocean. You can't see it but trust me, it's there. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is like an iceberg to a vast majority of our members across the country. They see the tip (think logo and the occasional mentions at general membership meetings) but not the mass.
Peer to Peer, Member to Member
I have always enjoyed selling. Having someone understand what you are speaking about and then watching as their realization that you have something they need or value. It truly is truly an art form although it's not 100% fool proof. Knowing your subject, inside and out, is a sure method of placing you in the direct line of success.
To Dues Or Not To Dues, Why Is This Even A Question?
I have been hearing some disturbing views on the value of bringing in new members versus generating more non dues revenue. It seems that the mindset has become that it's more profitable to generate non dues revenue than to expend time and resources on recruiting new members. Is this the chief culprit in membership numbers being stagnant? The very reason for our home builder associations is advocacy.
The Future of NAHB Membership Is Here
Have you ever gone to a gym looking to sign up only to be told you have to pay for your entire year in advance? Chances are that you haven't. Have you ever visited Amazon.com to purchase an item only to be told that it will take 60 days (on average) to process order?
A Fresh Start
A fresh start is always good, particularly when the previous "go at it" didn't go at it quite so well, at least for quite a few in the Federation. The home-building industry has been held back over the past 8 years plus by many obstacles. It appears that some or most of those obstacles will start to clear as President Trump begins his first full week in office. Will Obamacare be repealed and replaced?
Congratulations to Dean Mon NAHB Third Vice Chairman '17
The road to success is a winding, hilly, detour filled highway. If you persevere you can navigate the road and if your patient, you will reach each stop along the way, eventually.Dean Mon, an NAHB leader, has reached his next stop; the National Association of Home Builders' Third Vice Chairman position. Dean started his career at NAHB's national volunteer level in 1990 and has experienced many committee roster spots and quite a few committee chairman roles.
Another Run Around the Sun
What a year, what an ending what a chance for new beginnings.2016 was a fierce year for politics, more so on the national level. Some would even say "nasty." I am one of them.
It's Christmas Time
My favorite holiday is only 24 days away. It's this time of the year that Association Maximization closes up shop and settles in for a month of HBA installations, company Christmas parties and of course, family and friends. We have a lot to think about as 2017 comes roaring in and we leave 2016 behind. An exciting year, to say the least but we move forward.
Time to be Thankful
Thanksgiving is a week away and with it the Holiday Season begins. We all have our private thoughts on what brings each of us to being thankful after another year in our lives comes to an end. The important point to keep clear is that you are thankful. Never take for granted the things in your life that make up your life.
Make Home Building Great Again
(Disclaimer: this is an opinion piece based solely on my opinion.)A new president always brings a fresh start, a new beginning, but what we all had to go through to get to this fresh start was nothing short of miraculous. I hope our nation can fully heal but I realize that we are as divided a nation as we have ever been. So many bad actors in this national play.
My Two Cents
In five days we will know the fate of the United States. Trump or Clinton? It's anyone's guess but I have to say I have never witnessed such an embarrassing (for our country) presidential campaign. Both candidates have historic percentages of the country disliking each.
A Reminder I Wanted to Share
Today started off like any other day. I was up early, went into my office and started my day filling out a sales report, emailing "thank yous" to potential customers for opportunities, contacting current customers to make sure their needs are met and game planning my next week.I then spent time at my state association meeting on matters of concern for our state building industry. While there, I poured a cup of coffee and sat down but I looked at the message on the cup, one that I must have read dozens of times before, and I thought to myself "this is what I do.
It's Your Voice; Use It or Lose It!
Today's blog is very short but gets right to the heart of the message; go vote!November 8th, 2016 is election day and with it, a new president and possible changes in congress that can change the flow of our lives as it relates to the home building industry. As members of our National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), through all of our local home builders associations (HBA), we have a responsibility to our family & co-workers to make sure we vote. We also need to make sure that others in our circle vote as well.
The 2017 International Builders Show Update
Today's blog is from our International Builders (IBS) Chair, Ann Garvey. Ann would like to give us an update with less than 90 days to go. She leads a great team of volunteer members and extremely professional NAHB staff all with this goal in mind; your best convention experience to date! The 2017 International Builders Show UpdateAnn Garvey, 2017 IBS Chair BuildersShow.
To Endorse or Not to Endorse?
That truly is the question...The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has the answer; YES! NAHB has decided that this election year, for congress, that they will endorse candidates for reelection. I say "BRAVO!
Shining a Spotlight on Careers in Construction
Did you know that it takes an average of 22 different subcontractors to build a home? October is Careers in Construction Month and it’s a perfect time to recognize the contributions of all the professionals working in residential construction as well as highlight the rewarding careers available in the industry. Indeed, a home builder relies on a number of highly trained workers to get the job done right. This includes dozens of skilled artisans and professionals, including carpenters, architects, engineers, plumbers, electricians, painters and landscapers.
The Future Looks Bright
"Life is divided into three terms - that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present, to live better in the future." - William Wordsworth The future comes everyday at midnight, this no one can dispute. Our association.
